Why do we have spinal curves?
Do you know why your spine is curved? Read this article to find out.
Preceding the advancements of Roman architecture, New York skyscrapers, and the Sears Tower by at least a few thousand years; our bodies were "smart" enough to adapt spinal curves.
These spinal curves develop over time. We are born with our mid back (thoracic) curve. We then develop the low back (lumbar) and neck (cervical) curves as we begin to sit, creep, crawl, and walk. These curves are essential to displace force and give us stability and strength. Curves allow the forces of gravity and our body weight to be displaced, instead of just loading the vertebrae/disc below. Without any curves our low back would have every other bone and the weight of our entire upper body resting directly upon it! Over time this would cause degeneration, as no single section of our spine is designed to handle the entire load of our bodies.
Just like the arches on the Coliseum in Rome, our bodies use spinal curves to add strength and stability.
