TRIDENT Program to Offer Spring Break Camp

Brandon Sports and Aquatics Center’s (BSAC) Team TRIDENT Program announced plans to expand its successful day and after-school program to include a summer camp and spring schedule during Hillsborough County Schools’ nonschool days. Team TRIDENT was launched in September 2011, serving adults and school-age children with intellectual disabilities.

TRIDENT, an acronym for “Training and Recreation for the Intellectually Disabled Enhancing Natural Talents,” is headed by former Hillsborough County director of Special Olympics Tom Denham III. The summer camp program will mirror the successful day program currently serving adults who have graduated high school, and the after-school program that serves school-age children. Both programs create an active recreation environment for the participants. Plus, the day and summer programs feature two to three hours per day of classroom time that focuses on training independent life skills not taught by any other local programs.

BSAC will host an open house and Introductory presentation of the TRIDENT Program on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. for teachers, parents, guardians and caregivers of intellectually disabled individuals. Tours of the facility will be available. The summer program begins Monday June 11. The spring break session is from March 12-16.

BSAC executive director, Chuck Burgess, hopes that every child and adult in the area with intellectual disabilities has the opportunity to be a part of this innovative program.

“Our TRIDENT program continues to serve as a beacon of light for the intellectually disabled population in our community. It is inspiring to be around such an impactful program every day," he said.

Those interested in attending the open house on Feb. 15 should contact Denham by calling 813-545-4368 or via email attdenham@mybsac.org.
