Hillsborough Deputies to Honor 9/11 Fallen Heroes

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is marking Thursday’s 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., by remembering those who sacrificed their lives that day.

The agency’s 9/11 Fallen Heroes Memorial will be officially dedicated at 8:25 a.m. in the parking lot adjacent to the Malcom Beard Sheriff’s Operations Center, 2008 E. 8th Ave. in Ybor City.

“The unveiling will take place at the approximate time the first plane, piloted by terrorists, struck the first tower,” sheriff’s office spokeswoman Debbie Carter wrote in an email.

The memorial includes a beam recovered from the World Trade Center’s second tower. The display also incorporates a sculpture by artist Beck Ault called “Fearless Champions.” The piece represents the first responders and survivors of that day, Carter said.

The ceremony, set to be emceed by former TV reporter Don Germaise, includes an invocation by Idelwild Baptist Church’s Pastor Ken Whitten, guest speaker retired Navy Capt. Jeff Cathey and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue’s Capt. Brian Muldowney, whose brother died in the line of duty on Sept. 11.
