Learn to Communicate Effectively with Help from the Spirited Toastmasters

The Spirited Toastmasters, a branch of Toastmasters International, can assist in the development of public speaking and leadership skills.

Ever wish you could improve your public speaking skills in a friendly and supportive environment? With the help of Toastmasters International, you can.

Since 1924, the organization has helped millions become more confident in front of audiences in a self-paced program. Constructive evaluation is the heart of the Toastmasters program, providing participants with encouragement for efforts and skills.

Providing a platform to learn how to effectively express yourself in any situation, Toastmasters currently has more than 200,000 members in 80 countries. There are more than 12,500 clubs located around the world, including the local branch located in Bloomingdale — the Spirited Toastmasters.

Led by newly elected branch president, Patrick Murphy, the Spirited Toastmasters club was officially launched by Toastmasters International in September 2010. In only 10 short months, the Spirited Toastmasters achieved the coveted status of a Distinguished Club by Toastmasters International, a goal rarely achieved in less than one year.

According to Andrew Magann, vice president of PR and membership, members learn communication skills by working in the Competent Communication manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking assignments designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking. Members also learn leadership skills by taking on various meeting roles and working in the Competent Leadership manual.

“In our learn-by-doing approach, we don't lecture members about leadership skills; we give them responsibilities and mentoring to help. Then we ask them to lead,” explained Magann.

The Toastmasters program offers many benefits for people from all walks of life. Through Toastmasters, participants are able to increase their confidence, become better speakers and leaders and communicate more effectively overall.

“We have fun, friendly meetings and offer a very supportive environment,” Magann said. “We are a diverse group with various experience levels and welcome everyone.”

For those interested in joining the Spirited Toastmasters Club, it is recommended that you attend a club meeting to see what it is all about. Attending meetings as a guest is free. If you decide that membership is for you, it is very affordable.

The Spirited Toastmasters meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month at St. Stephen Catholic School, 12910 Boyette Rd., Riverview. New members and guests are always welcome.
