Sheriff's Deputy Honored For Attempt To Save Drowning Boy

RIVERVIEW, FL — Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Donna Lusczynski presented the first of a new, limited-edition recognition coin to a deputy who put his life at risk trying to save a child who drowned at Bullfrog Creek.

The "Chief's Challenge Coin" is awarded to either a law enforcement or civilian employee of the sheriff's office who has exhibited extraordinary performance on the job, either through one heroic act or day-to-day actions. The coins were personally designed and commissioned by Lusczynski. Each coin is numbered and presented with a specially designed card.

Sgt. Eric Powell of District IV received the first challenge coin in recognition of his heroic actions on July 31. Powell jumped into Bullfrog Creek in Gibsonton to attempt to rescue a 9-year-old boy who drowned after his mother put him on her back and took him into the creek. Sgt. Powell put his own safety on the line to try to save the life of the child.

"I wanted to thank him for his bravery and dedication to service," said Lusczynski. "This challenge coin is a way to let individuals know that their actions do not go unnoticed and that I am grateful for what they do every day for our community."
