In addition to all of the physical skills that they'll be working on this month, students will be discussing and practicing the following concepts that will help them to appreciate the value and benefit of becoming a brave person, both in and out of class:
- Courage defined: What does courage mean? What are people scared of?
- Taking healthy risks: How can I try new things and meet new people?
- Courage and values: How can I stand up for what I think is right and fair?
- Keeping control: How can I calm myself down and make good choices?
“Courage is not the absence of fear, as many children might think, but rather how we cope with our fears in the face of challenge. In fact, as parents and mentors, it’s important that we let children know that everyone (even heroes) gets scared sometimes. It’s how we cope with those fears that dictates our level of courage," said Dr. Robyn Silverman, Sidekicks' child and adolescent expert and creator of the Powerful Words Character Development system used at the facility.
"Excited does not even scratch the surface about how eager I am to work with our members this month as we focus on courage," said Manny Cabrera, chief instructor of Sidekicks Family Martial Arts Centers. "It’s what I consider to be a cornerstone character trait, and I know that as our members develop their courage, the benefits will be exponential and will be seen everywhere and enjoyed by everyone."
Sidekicks is located at 16633 Fishhawk Blvd., Lithia. For information, contact Cabrera at 813-661-2224 or visit www.FishHawkMartialArts.com.
