Even though they’re 6300 miles from Sochi, the residents of Spring Hills Lake Mary Assisted Living are staging their own Florida-style winter Olympics celebrations this month, which began with a community “parade of nations” on Friday, February 7. Marching behind banners of the USA and other nations such as Greece and France, which represent the ethnic heritages of the flag-bearers, the community has six “national” teams competing against one another throughout February. Games include creative adaptations of winter-weather sports, brain challenges and spelling bee competitions.
According to Robin Wolfe, Director of Recreation at the community, “Our residents always love connecting with the energy and spirit of friendly competition and whenever the Olympics roll around. But the winter games really capture our imaginations since we live in a warm climate. For example, we’ve devised our own indoor-style of curling and everybody is really excited about a ‘downhill’ event where each team will build marshmallow men which will slide on a track with ice-cube sleds. All of the residents love the pageantry of staging our parade of nations to launch the events and we’ll even have a medal ceremony at the end!”
