How to Spot Red Flags for Lawyers in Pompano Beach

If you're in the market for a new lawyer, keep in mind the following tips to spot red flags.

There are many legal situations in which having a lawyer is always a good idea. However, with so many lawyers out there offering their services and promising to be better than the other guys, it can get complicated to find the right lawyer to deal with your case. Unfortunately, not all lawyers follow the rules, which is why it’s important to stay on high alert for these red flags.

Watch Out for These 5 Red Flags

When talking to different lawyers, keep your “fraud senses” on high alert. Even professional-looking lawyers can be using black hat tactics in the background that can eventually hurt you or your case. If you’re in the market for a new lawyer, keep in mind the following tips to spot red flags.

Flag #1: Poor Communication

A good lawyer (and their team) will always communicate the latest status on your case. Beyond updates, they’ll also want to answer any questions you have about your case or the legal process. Most lawyers are available almost 24/7, every day of the week. When you can’t get a hold of your lawyer, especially after countless voice mails, emails, and text messages, that’s a big red flag.
Of course, lawyers get busy, you’re not their only client. But, at one point or another either your lawyer or a staff member should get back to you and answer any questions you might have.

Flag #2: Complicated Billing

Legal fees can get complicated at some point, but your lawyer should be able to explain every single bill they give you. If your lawyer is overbilling you, they could be inflating specific tasks, sometimes known as “padding time.” Keep an eye for vague bills, hidden expenses, and surcharges on legal costs.
As you review your bills, make sure either your lawyer or a staff member can explain what every charge was for. If you see any financial statement that’s vaguely defined or remains unclear to you, don’t be afraid to demand an answer, these are all red flags about your lawyer that must be addressed.

Flag #3: Lack of References

Experienced lawyers will have more than one reference or satisfied client they can cite. Anyone can say they guarantee results, but in the end, you’ll want to see real-life evidence of their previous work. Any successful attorney will be able to provide you with testimonials that include the outcome of the case. Also, you should be able to see references and testimonials on their website and social media pages. Not having any of these is a big red flag.

Flag #4: Unethical Behavior

Some lawyers might be guilty of poor communication, but when they start practicing unethical behavior that’s a huge red flag. Even though you want your lawyer to win the case, your lawyer should never do so by attempting to break the law or lying. If your lawyer gets caught doing unethical or illegal things, it will affect both of you. Keep an eye for unethical behavior such as:

  • Missing or showing up late to meetings
  • Missing document submission deadlines or filing paperwork incorrectly
  • Not asking you about individual decisions
  • Missing your calls
  • Giving your case to another staff member without letting you know

Flag #5: Unkempt Offices

While most people don’t take this into consideration, it’s an important aspect of your lawyer’s work practices. An unclean office space, a large number of empty offices, and stacks of unfiled papers are never a good sign when it comes to a lawyer. While you’re not asking your lawyers to have a high-end office space, you do expect it to be clean and organized.

Finding the Right One

Again, finding the right lawyer for your case takes time and research. If you ever find yourself looking for a lawyer in Pompano Beach, keep in mind these tips to spot red flags. Ideally, you’ll want to find lawyers that are responsive, communicative, and diligent about your case. Even when they’re working with different clients at the same time, it should feel as though you’re their number one client and priority. It’s also recommended to find lawyers that offer complimentary consultations. This way you can get a sense of their communication style and experience, so you can see if you’ll feel comfortable working with them during your case.
