Michael Ralby on Fatherhood and Friendships

While it's a known fact that motherhood can be challenging on friendships, fatherhood can be just as tolling on dads' relationships.

While it’s a known fact that motherhood can be challenging on friendships, fatherhood can be just as tolling on dad’s relationships. Becoming a father means you have more responsibilities than ever, which can make maintaining friendships difficult. Here are a few ideas to keep up with your friends while navigating fatherhood.

Start a Group Chat
The group chat gets a bad rep. Sometimes it can be the only thing keeping you in touch with your friends. Even a simple GIF can make you feel more connected to your friends. It’s easy for everyone to see what the other is up to, and you can easily fit it into your day. If the baby wakes up in the middle of a conversation, you can go back and read what you’ve missed.

Guys Night Out
This is important not just for your friendships, but for your sanity. Meeting up at a local restaurant and having a beer, or getting together for a game of cards can really help maintain your bond.

Join a Fantasy League
Sports can give you plenty to talk about, and a reason to keep in touch regularly. The friendly competition is fun when you can’t make it out to play a pickup game.

Implement a Family Night Out
Once a month, choose a meet-up location and bring the whole family along. Pizza places are great for this. You’ll get to catch up with the guys, and your partner can socialize, too. Even your baby can get some playtime in if your friends have kids.

Join a League
If you enjoy sports and can spare one night a week, then form a bowling or softball team with your friends. This combines many of the benefits mentioned above, and your partner and kids can come and cheer you on.

Becoming a parent doesn’t mean you have to isolate yourself from your friends. Your lifestyle may have changed, but true friendships grow with you. Integrate your family into your outings and it gets even easier. And remember, the most important thing is that you’re reaching out and communicating. People appreciate the fact that you’re making time for them.
