Bradenton's Week Worth of News

Random shootings, a grand building saved and other highlights of the past seven days.

Here are a handful of stories that resonated through last week.

The big news was the deal on the Mantee River Hotel, a.k.a., "." After 18 months of negotiation, the Downtown Development Authority and Widewaters Group agreed to terms for the rehabilitation of Bradenton's Roaring 20's-era high rise. Lawyers are busy drawing up papers, but it appears the public-private partnership will save a big piece of the city's history. It will return as a modern hotel inside, with historic features intact on the first floor and exterior.

A week ago today, was shot and killed while driving down 21st Street East at 4:00am. Three people are in jail for the crime. Police say it was a random act of violence, and there was no connection between the victim and the three men charged with murder or accessory to murder.

On Thursday night, was shot after hearing a fight break out in the Desoto Village Apartments. When he came to see what was happening, he was shot in the leg. Deputies are investigating. The victim is recovering from his wound.

After a 20-year wait, the dredging of is about to begin. Nearby residents were excited to hear the news last Tuesday. The work is set to begin Nov. 14.

And there was a reminder the Manatee Sheriff's Office will have through Halloween. If you're planning to party hard, snag a designated driver or carry the number of a cab company. It would be a real nightmare to get pinched for being pickled behind the wheel.
