MANATEE COUNTY, FL — A 51-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder after his 85-year-old father died from injuries sustained during a fight with him last week, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Deputies responded to a home in the 500 block of Magellan Drive in south Manatee County around 10 p.m. on Aug. 20 after receiving a report of a fight between Kieran Cantwell and his father, Richard Cantwell.

Kieran punched his father once in the face, causing Richard to fall backward and hit his head on the tile floor, the sheriff's office said.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

His son was arrested at the scene and initially charged with felony battery, the sheriff's office said. He remained in the Manatee County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

The elder Cantwell died on Monday from his injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

Following an investigation and consultation with the State Attorney's Office, Kieran was charged Friday with second-degree murder in connection with his father's death.

He remains in the Manatee County Jail.
