BRADENTON, FL — Two officers were injured — one seriously — by a man who hit them with a vehicle overnight while fleeing a gas station in Bradenton, according to police, who said that officers fired at the man following the crash.
The incident occurred around 3:20 a.m. Sunday, as officers were responding to a report of a man with a gun harassing customers at a Wawa in the area of First Street and Sixth Avenue East, police said.
"The suspect struck the officers while attempting to flee," Bradenton police said in a social media post. "Two additional officers fired at his vehicle."
The man — later identified as Dejerrian D. Murray — fled to the Sunshine Skyway, then back into Bradenton, pursued by several law enforcement agencies, before crashing at First Street and 10th Avenue West, according to police.
A senior patrol officer with Bradenton police remained in intensive care late Sunday morning with a traumatic brain injury, authorities said, adding the second officer suffered a lower-body injury and was released from the hospital.
Murray, 35, suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital and taken to Manatee County jail on suspicion of two counts of aggravated battery on an officer with a deadly weapon, fleeing an officer at a high speed or with wanton disregard, multiple hit-and-run charges, reckless driving causing serious injury, violating probation and resisting arrest, according to police.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer-involved shooting, police said.
