Carol Whitmore on Tentative Tax Increase for Sheriff's Office
Chairwoman Carol Whitmore discusses the county commissioners voting 5-2 to increase the proposed millage rate.
County Commissioners voted 5-2 to increase the proposed millage rate, setting the cap at 6.3703 mills, up from 6.2993. Sheriff Brad Steube asked for the increase to pay for 20 additional deputies. That would amount to a $10.65 tax increase on a home with a taxable value of $150,000.
Commissioners asked Steube to work with County Administrator Ed Hunzeker to look for cuts to his budget that would allow the commissioners to avoid adopting the increase in September.
The County Commission will hold two public hearings on the budget during the month of September.
