County Commissioner Joe McClash on Proposed Millage Increase

County Commissioner Joe McClash says Manatee County taxpayers would still get a break on taxes even with a proposed increase to the millage rate.

Last week County Commissioners approved an increase in the proposed millage rate and set public hearings for September.

Money from the proposed millage increase was designated for hiring 20 new deputies. They will be divided between road patrol and the jail.  During that meeting, commissioners asked the sheriff to work with the county administrator to come up with options other than a tax increase to pay for new hires at the sheriff's department.

During a meeting today, the county commission approved an option to use some savings in the current year's budget to fund 10 positions, rather than 20. If that option is approved in September the millage rate would remain flat in the upcoming tax year.
