Driver Charged Weeks After Fatal Hit-And-Crash In Manatee: FL Troopers

MANATEE COUNTY, FL — Weeks after a bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Manatee County, the driver was arrested Wednesday, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

John Sanfanandre, 84, of Bradenton was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and booked into Manatee County Jail.

The bicyclist, a 28-year-old Sarasota man, was hit March 22 around 9 p.m. by Sanfanandre while crossing State Road 70, near the intersection of 60th Street E., in the crosswalk, FHP said.

Sanfanandre drove away from the scene.

The victim, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, was brought to Blake Hospital with serious injuries. He died the next day.

An “exhaustive criminal investigation” by the Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide division eventually led troopers to Sanfanandre, the agency said.
