Drunk Driver Who Plowed Into FL Trooper On Skyway Sentenced: Court

A drunk driver who plowed into a FL state trooper during the Skyway 10K in March 2022 was sentenced to 10 years in prison, records show.

MANATEE COUNTY, FL — A drunk driver who plowed into a Florida state trooper during the Skyway 10K in March 2022 was sentenced to 10 years in state prison, Manatee County court records show.

Kristen Watts, 54, of Sarasota drove the wrong way on Interstate 275 toward the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, ignoring Florida Highway Patrol road closures for the race.

She crashed nearly head-on with Trooper Toni Schuck of Tampa, who positioned her law enforcement vehicle to protect race participants.

Watts was arrested and charged with DUI causing serious bodily injury, driving under the influence causing property damage and/or personal damage, reckless driving causing property damage and/or personal injury, and fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.

In addition to prison time, Watts has been sentenced to four years of probation upon her release. Her license has also been suspended for five years and she must attend at least three Alcoholics Anonymous meetings each week.
