Gun Found In Student’s Fanny Pack On Campus: Manatee Sheriff

A student faces charges after bringing a gun to Southeast High School in a fanny pack, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.

BRADENTON, FL — A 16-year-old boy faces charges after a gun was found in his fanny pack while he was at Southeast High School Monday, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office news release.

While deputies released the suspect's name, it is Patch's policy not to identify those in the juvenile court system. MCSO didn’t clarify whether the teen is being charged as an adult or juvenile.

The gun was found around 2 p.m. when school administrators searched the student for a vape device, the sheriff’s office said.

The gun was reported to the school resource officer, who secured the weapon and detained the teen.

No threats were made about a shooting or violence to anyone at the school. Because the student was in custody, the incident didn’t involve a shelter-in-place, MCSO said.

The teen was charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

Deputies are still investigating where the student got the gun and why he had it on school property.
