On Jan. 11, Wood kicked open the front door of his ex-girlfriend’s home, where she lived with their three children.

He went into her bedroom, where she was in bed with their 11-month-old child, and beat her multiple times with a bat, the state attorney’s office said. During the beating, she rolled onto the floor to cover the infant and protect him from the blows.

Their 10-year-old daughter came into the room to try and stop him from beating her mother, but the child was unable to prevent the attack.

"We are very pleased with the jury's verdict in this case. We are especially proud of the victim's bravery in coming forward and testifying in trial, as well as the bravery her children showed on that day,” Scott Collin, assistant state attorney, said. “It was through their compelling testimony, and the work of the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, we were able to achieve a just verdict, which held the defendant accountable (for) this violent attack."
