Manatee Deputy Kills Man Who Claimed To Have Gun

Manatee County Sheriff's investigators are looking into the shooting of a man by a Manatee County Deputy Tuesday night, Jan. 23.

BRADENTON, FL – Manatee County Sheriff’s investigators are looking into the shooting of a man by a Manatee County Deputy Tuesday night, Jan. 23.

According to a sheriff’s office news release, deputies responded to a call about a domestic disturbance around 9:20 p.m. at the Marathon gas station in the 3000 block of Cortez Road West.

Witnesses say Corey Mobley, 38, who was separated from his wife, began arguing with her after meeting at the gas station to exchange custody of their children. When deputies arrived on the scene, Mobley drove away.

A short time later, he pulled his car into the driveway of a home in the 6300 block of 6th St. West in Bradenton. He then ran behind a nearby home and deputies followed him.

When deputies caught up with Mobley, he began shouting, "I've got a gun for you," reaching toward his pocket and moving toward them. One deputy fired two shots. Mobley fell to the ground but got back up and continued taunting deputies with, "I've got a gun for you," according to witnesses. That's when the deputy shot him two more times.

Mobley was was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The deputy's name has not been released.
