
Manatee County elementary schools have security guards on the job now, but those guards are unarmed.
The school district would like to see that change, but it needs to hear from Florida’s Attorney General’s Office before it can allow contract staff from Sarasota Security Patrol to start packing on its campuses. It’s unclear at this time if it is legal for the district to allow security guards to carry weapons on elementary campuses.
The district sent a letter Tuesday asking the attorney general’s office to issue an opinion on the legalities involved, the Bradenton Herald reported.

It is unclear how soon the state will respond to the request.
