The College Reach-Out Program (CROP) at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) hosted nine high school students and six parents during its annual ACT and SAT Testing Workshop in November. The workshop was designed to introduce participants to the tests and review testing skills and strategies.

During the workshop, students were presented with test-taking tips from a facilitator, then timed while taking portions of ACT English and math practice tests. Following the practice tests, the moderator reviewed the answers and explained which were correct. Parents took the opportunity to meet with CROP staff about access to college, financial aid, SCF admission and the SCF Summer Bridge Program. Of the participants responding to a survey after the program, 100% said that they enjoyed the workshop and that it was a positive learning experience.

CROP’s primary objective is to increase the number of low-income educationally disadvantaged students in middle and high school who, upon high school graduation, are admitted to and successfully complete postsecondary education. Participants are students who otherwise would be unlikely to seek admission to a community college, state university or independent institution without special support and recruitment efforts.
