State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s (SCF) 2020 Summer Bridge Program helped 16 recently graduated high school students prepare to succeed in college by giving them a jumpstart on their education.

The students, who were part of SCF’s College Reach-Out Program (CROP), completed two college courses and earned three to six college credits during the 2020 Summer Bridge Program, which exists to increase the number of low-income, educationally disadvantaged students who enroll in postsecondary education and increase the likelihood of their success once in college.

For the first time, SCF delivered the six-week program online. Each student received a scholarship covering tuition, books and supplies for a combined value of over $1,000. CROP staff worked with scholars throughout the summer to ensure that they completed their final college forms as well as their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to achieve a smooth transition into the fall semester.

All 16 Summer Bridge participants are planning to attend college, with 13 of the students enrolled at SCF this fall. As part of the program, college staff will check in with the students regularly to make sure they continue to make progress in their educational pursuits.
