Scott Lynch Hypnosis Provides Mental Training for Success
At Scott Lynch Hypnosis, Debra Scott and DJ Lynch provide clients with the mental motivation necessary to face personal challenges and overcome obstacles.
A pair of women have opened a new business to promote the ability of the mind to overcome most obstacles.
Whether it is an addiction to cigarettes, unhealthy eating habits, test apprehension, a fear of public speaking, general anxiety or even shyness, nearly everyone has a habit or a phobia they wish they could overcome. Debra Scott and DJ Lynch of Scott Lynch Hypnosis believe the majority of those battles can be overcome through self-guided hypnosis.
“People often think of hypnosis as a theatrical stage performance,” said Scott. “This is not like that by a long stretch. What we do is a practical, training focused exercise. It’s a unique and wonderful tool to train the brain to think differently; more positively.”

Lynch takes it a step further calling their methods "de-hypnosis."
“What we actually do is train people to consciously let go of the harmful things they’ve been trained to believe, which have created obstacles for them,” Lynch said.

Scott, an NGH certified consulting hypnotist, wellness coach and motivational training specialist, co-owns the business with Lynch, who is an NGH board certified consulting hypnotist and instructor, certified life coach and Reiki master instructor. Together, the duo has more than 40 years of experience in medical staff and corporate training, which they combine with hypnosis practices to assist clients in establishing the right mindset to overcome challenges.
A first time visit to Scott Lynch Hypnosis is two hours long because, prior to the hour long hypnosis session, Scott and Lynch spend an hour performing an assessment and providing a tutorial that explains exactly how the process works.
“Since we don’t do the theatrics typically associated with hypnosis, it’s down to earth and there’s no lack of trust,” said Lynch. “We prefer to be transparent and truthful, so the tutorial gives the client a good understanding of what is really happening.”
After the tutorial and initial assessment during which the client’s goals are determined, Scott and Lynch host an hour-long hypnosis session.
Scott and Lynch explained that contrary to popular belief, clients remain awake and in a consciously-attentive state during their sessions. They use computer analogies to explain the process, saying that hypnosis allows clients to “turn off their spam filters” and “download” ideas and concepts to the subconscious level where they can take effect.
“We don’t snap our fingers and say ‘go,'" said Lynch. “That’s not how hypnosis works. We let the client relax and consciously detach, but they remain entirely present for the duration of the session.”
The session is recorded to a CD the client can bring home and listen to at his or her convenience. Although people sometimes accomplish their goal during the initial session, Scott said that they recommend clients use the CD for at least 21 days following their session.
She described the CD as an “encouragement tool” that helps the client continue to work toward the goal from home, yielding better results.
“It’s like an athlete running a marathon,” Lynch explained. “He doesn’t win it in one practice. The mental aspect to accomplishing a goal is equally important to the physical. If you don’t mentally prepare to win, you won’t.”
Lynch, who ran a hypnosis practice for 14 years in Little Rock, Ark., before relocating to Bradenton and partnering with Scott, said she has helped clients overcome myriad phobias and challenges such as a fear of bridges or spiders or addiction to soda. She has helped actors overcome their stage fright and athletes mentally train themselves to excel in their sports.
“People often ask what our demographic is, and that’s really hard to pinpoint,” Lynch said. “We like to tell them our demographic is anyone from 6 to 96 years old. Children, teenagers, adults and seniors — we help anyone with an issue or challenge to overcome.”
Scott added that several parents are looking to alternative practices such as hypnosis to help their children overcome anxiety or behavioral problems.
“Doctors want to medicate them, which makes them become lethargic couch potatoes. Kids know they aren’t supposed to feel that way. What we do trains them to let go subconsciously, and unlike medication, it comes with absolutely zero negative side effects,” she said.
Lynch, who teaches a course on the psychobiology of hypnosis, said that increasing numbers of doctors, trauma nurses, counselors and social workers are attending her classes in search of alternative solutions to their patients’ problems.
“Doctors are coming in on their own accord and saying things like ‘I prescribe people medications and they just aren’t working. There has to be something else out there,’” she said.
As the stigma surrounding alternative medical practices begins to fade, Lynch and Scott say they hope to see a practical application of self-guided hypnosis techniques introduced in hospitals and medical practices.
“People are always searching for an alternative, and too often they come in and tell us this is a last resort. We don’t want it to be a last resort — we want it to be a first resort,” Scott said.
