Student volunteers learn valuable lessons off campus

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) Mustangs have busy schedules, but that doesn’t stop them from giving back to the community. Some people may not realize teens care about volunteering, but they do.

Volunteering can help teens gain many valuable experiences. They can learn to work with and handle money. Many teenagers do not know how to work with money, so volunteering at places like concession stands help them develop those skills.

Volunteering at animal shelters is a way to get service hours and have fun at the same time. Going to animal shelters greatly helps with all the animals they have.

Besides giving service hours, volunteering can also help teenagers with social skills. Volunteers must socialize with others to have things run smoothly. It gives you plenty of experience talking to different people that can help students in the future.

LRHS has several clubs dedicated to volunteering. National Honor Society, Lakewood Leaders and Key Club are examples of clubs that provide students with volunteer hours.

Students for Safety’s president, sophomore Marissa Briggs, explained the types of volunteer opportunities that club offers its members.

“We have members go out into our community and speak to businesses and possible sponsors to get donations for our cause,” said Briggs.

“There will be multiple volunteer opportunities scheduled for the Spring semester,” she continued.
