Teen Motorcyclist Killed By Drunk Driver In Ellenton: Police

A 53-year-old Ellenton man has been charged with DUI manslaughter in a Sunday evening crash that killed a Parrish teenager, police said.

ELLENTON, FL — A 53-year-old Ellenton man has been arrested for DUI manslaughter following a Sunday evening crash that killed a 17-year-old Parrish motorcyclist, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release. The collision took place around 8:01 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 301 and 42nd Avenue East in Ellenton.

The teenager was riding his motorcycle east on US 301, approaching 42nd Avenue East, when David Shanks made a left turn in front of him, the release said. Shanks’ Jeep hit the teen, throwing him from his motorcycle into the intersection. The Jeep landed in a ditch on the west side of 42nd Avenue East.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. Shanks was arrested for DUI manslaughter and brought to Manatee County Jail.
