Accused Killer Of Valrico Man Attempts To Hang Himself

The man accused of carjacking and killing a Valrico grandfather has attempted to take his own life at the Falkenburg Road Jail.

BRANDON, FL — The man accused of carjacking and killing a Valrico grandfather has attempted to take his own life at the Falkenburg Road Jail.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, inmate James Hanson Jr. attempted suicide. He has been taken to the Tampa General Hospital.

The sheriff's office said Hanson went into the yard during recreation/shower time and attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself with a sheet he concealed under his towel for showering. Hanson tied the sheet to a basketball goal in the recreation area and then tried to hang himself.

A deputy noticed Hanson's attempt to harm himself and intervened, performing CPR on Hanson while awaiting paramedics. Hanson is listed in critical condition.

Hanson, 39, is charged with premeditated first-degree murder, carjacking, grand theft auto, kidnapping, robbery and resisting arrest with violence stemming from the robbery of the CenterState Bank in Valrico and carjacking of Valrico resident's Mathew Korattiyil's Lexus SUV with Korattiyil inside.
