Box Car City

Imagine it…sleeping in a box because there is no bed
– no home – in which to sleep. Many individuals and families in Hillsborough
County experience this on a daily basis, many of whom live in the Greater
Brandon area.

Family Promise of Greater Brandon (FPGB) seeks to
shed light on the experience of having no safe place to sleep this Saturday,
April 5, 2014, during Box Car City, its inaugural fundraiser. Guests pay $20 to sleep in a box Saturday night on the grounds of Nativity Catholic
Church.

 “Box
Car City is an activity for the entire family,” said Deborah Humphrey, FPGB’s board
chair. “This event will not only help raise funds to allow us to assist
homeless families, but will also help guests to understand what a homeless
family experiences on a daily basis.”

Family Promise of Greater Brandon will open its
doors to homeless families on May 3, 2014. FPGB and its partner churches will
provide a safe, comfortable place for homeless families to sleep. During the
day, FPGB will partner with area organizations to provide various classes
designed to empower the families to secure employment and permanent housing –

lasting independence.

Box
Car City guests will be provided a sack dinner, much like homeless families are
provided when they stay at a shelter. There will also be games and live music
from 7-9 p.m.

“Family Promise of Greater Brandon is not a
shelter,” said Kathy Brogli, executive director. “It is a partnership with area
churches, service organizations, and, most importantly, homeless families, to
provide a safe place for our homeless guests to sleep and to reduce the stress

on a homeless family, so they can concentrate on securing jobs and permanent
housing.”
