MAhole’ Musings … Where’s MY Invite?!?

If this doesn't elicit some comments ... nothing will.

I was living in Massachusetts back in 2004 when homosexual couples were granted the same rights as heterosexual couples in matters of marriage. It really has been seven years since gays and lesbians were recognized as being equal to us straights in matters matrimonial and legal. This was followed by most of New England (sans Maine) and Iowa  — wait, Iowa? Yeah, I am still puzzled by that one.

Now, New York has joined the growing list of places that recognizes the right of same-sex couples to be treated equally where family is concerned. The jury is still out on the areas of fairness and respect, as those are more personal in nature. Believe me, there are plenty of breeder couples in the world that will never earn my respect nor my desire to treat them fairly. Too harsh? Yeah, you’re right.

I guess I am just a bit jealous of the weddings and receptions that will now be taking place throughout the Empire State. I was so excited back in ‘04 that the weddings of my friends were going to be fabulous, and the receptions even more so.

But did it happen?

No, it did not.

“Were going to have small family wedding,” one set of friends said. Another decided the reception would be a simple dinner affair, another went to the Justice of the Peace and skipped having a ceremony altogether. What the heck, people!! I want to boogie the night away with folks who know how to party!

Anyway, I do hope Florida eventually joins its Northern brethren in allowing same-sex couples to share the good times, bad times, sick times and healthy times (and let’s not forget the tax deadlines) that are the rites of passage in any marriage. C’mon, the State already allows same-sex couples to adopt children. Isn’t this a bit backwards? It’s one of those situations that makes me question what it is that the anti-gay* crowd hopes to achieve by blocking gay marriage. So I guess that when it comes to gays and lesbians, having children out of wedlock is acceptable? But I digress.

Florida — and the rest of the country — will eventually come around to understanding that whether it is two guys, two gals, or one of each, marriage is less about love and more about the legal standing of two consenting adults. Less about the religious aspects and more about the compatibility of two human beings. And less about the one group of individuals trying to force another out of the opportunity to take part in a most basic and accepted societal norm.

*don’t bother to try and explain to me that these folks are not homophobic but merely seek to “secure the sanctity of traditional marriage” or whatever other crap they try to pull out of their hat. Just admit it — they find the idea of gays and lesbians having sexual relations to be distasteful.
