9-Year-Old Hospitalized After Dover Shooting
Deputies say the boy was accidentally shot by his brother.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate a shooting at 5721 Turkey Tree Lane in Dover.
According to the sheriff’s office, a call came in just before 1 p.m. When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a 9-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the cheek area of his face. The boy was taken by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue to a local hospital. He is in serious condition, but is expected to survive, an email to media from the agency stated.
While the investigation is still ongoing, deputies say the victim and his two brothers, ages 11 and 13, were home alone while their mom was at work. The mother, the email said, had just obtained a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun from a friend. She had the gun locked in her bedroom by securing the door with a padlock and hasp, the sheriff’s office said.

“The three boys managed to get inside the mother’s bedroom by removing the door lock hasp,” the email said.
The boys then took the gun outside to play with it in the woods, the email added.

“The boys returned inside the residence with the handgun and brought the gun to their bedroom where they all sleep. It was there that the 11-year-old discharged one round that struck the 9-year-old brother in the face,” the email said.
Names of those involved are not being released at this time. It is unclear at this time if any criminal charges will be filed. The family, the email said, is cooperating with the investigation.
