The Estates at Carpenters Honors Vietnam Doughnut Dollies for National Donut Day
Area Salvation Army/Red Cross Doughnut Dolly shares wartime experience
Every year, the first Friday in June marks National Donut Day, and while Americans enjoy the delicious, sugary dessert on a frequent basis, many are not aware of the historical significance the donut has on the American culture.
On June 5, 2015, The Estates at Carpenters, a not-for-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community, will celebrate the 77th National Donut Day by educating Polk County residents how the donut became a symbol of ‘home’ during World War I, II and Vietnam, and honoring area Doughnut Dollies who served during the Vietnam War.
As part of the festivities, the senior living community will screen the documentary film ‘A Touch of Home: The Vietnam War’s Red Cross Girls,’ directed and produced by husband and wife team, Patrick and Cheryl Fries. During the screening, Susan Bradshaw McClean, one of approximately 650 American Doughnut Dollies left across the nation, will share her experiences of the Vietnam War and making of the film.
