Firefighters Rescue Valrico Woman From Burning Home

Firefighters rescued a Valrico woman from her burning home Monday night after she ran back inside to retrieve her medication.

VALRICO, FL -- Hillsborough County firefighters rescued a Valrico woman from her burning home Monday night after she ran back inside to retrieve her medication.

According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, the two alarm fire broke out at a home in the 4000 block of Highgate Drive off Durant Road May 27 at about 8:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, crews found flames shooting through the roof and back side of the home. One of the residents told fire crews that his wife had gone back inside for her medication and had not come out. Firefighters immediately pushed through the front door to find zero visibility inside and the roof about to collapse.

Once inside, firefighters heard the sound of screams and located the wife who had collapsed in a back bedroom. Crews carried her outside where she received medical attention and was transported to the hospital with smoke-related injuries.

Meanwhile, crews who had been fighting the fire outside called for a second alarm to help battle the rapidly expanding blaze.

It took crews about 45 minutes to get the fire under control.
