Florida Cops Under Investigation for Racing to Bakery

Five police officers from three separate South Florida law enforcement agencies are in a heap of trouble after a passerby recorded them racing down Interstate 95 with their emergency lights on.

The problem is there was no emergency.

The officers – from Miami-Dade, Miccosukee and Miami – were simply heading to breakfast at Karlo Bakery on Coral Way, Local 10 News reported. The incident happened last week and even involved one cop blocking oncoming traffic so the others could get by, the station reported.

An investigation into the improper use of emergency lights is under way.

Karlo Bakery & Café is described as a “Latin-style sweets factory” by the Miami New Times. It serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner, in addition to a “gamut of deep fried indulgences.”

South Florida police aren’t the only ones raising eyebrows this week. Police in Waldo – the town named the third worst in North America for speed traps – spilled the beans earlier this week that they’ve been under orders to write 12 tickets each per 12-hour shift. Waldo’s police chief has been suspended following the outcome of an investigation.

Bucking the trend of unusual behavior, a Fort Myers Police officer made national headlines recently for braving lightning and rain to rescue a man trapped in a storm.
