Florida Mom Finds Mold in Capri Sun

While Kraft Foods took steps earlier this year to correct mold problems, a new case has been reported in Lakeland.

Imagine a Lakeland mom’s surprise when her 5-year-old son swallowed what looked like a worm from his Capri Sun straw.

That worm turned out to be mold, the latest in a conga line of complaints about moldy growths in the popular juice pouches, according to NBC.

Kraft Foods, the maker of Capri Sun, has been under fire for some time about mold issues with its juice pouches. Earlier this year, Kraft announced a change in its pouches that would enable consumers to see if mold was growing inside. It also reminded consumers that Capri Sun is made without artificial flavors, preservatives or colors, which means mold can indeed grow, Bloomberg Businessweek reported.

“Most foods, especially those without artificial preservatives, eventually spoil and get moldy,” Kraft’s Caroline Krajewski told Businessweek.

The Lakeland case occurred in late August, NBC reported. The change in pouches was announced in April.

The Florida mom in question, Ashlee Schilling, contacted Kraft and had her son checked out by a doctor. Kraft told the news station it tested the pouch and did confirm the substance inside was mold. It says the case has been resolved.

Meanwhile, for those parents with kids who have a passion for Capri Suns, the new pouches have clear panels. So just look inside before popping a straw in and be sure to heed expiration dates.
