Man Climbs Cruise Ship Mast, Falls to His Death

The accident occurred early Monday morning at PortMiami.

A 20-year-old North Carolina man died Monday morning after falling 20 feet from the Carnival Ecstasy’s forward mast while the ship was at PortMiami.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. after the man, who has yet to be identified, entered a restricted area and climbed the mast, the Miami Herald reported.

The man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he later died, Local 10 reported.

The area near the forward mast is off-limits to passengers and there are signs indicating such, the Herald quoted Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz as saying.

Foul play is not suspected.

“Everything points to it being an accident,” the Herald quoted Miami-Dade Det. Alvaro Zabaleta as saying.

Even so, the case is being investigated by the Miami-Dade Police Department’s homicide bureau.
