SEFFNER, FL -- A man who drove his car off the interstate and into a body of water was rescued through the collaboration of Hillsborough County first responders on Thursday, Sept. 27.

At 10:25 p.m., a witness called 911 saying a car drove off southbound Interstate 75 southbound at the Interstate 4 ramp near Seffner. The car became submerged in a retention pond, but the driver, Nicholas Fry, was able to climb out of a window and onto the roof of his car. Fry was uninjured. Deputies threw him a life vest to wear while waiting for rescuers.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office dive team arrived and, around 11 p.m., firefighters with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue were able to combine their ladders and extend them out to Fry so he could climb from the roof of the car onto dry land.

Fry said his car slid off the highway because it was slick from rain.

The dive team headed by Deputy Chris Sullivan and Deputy Jeremy Pollack were able to tow the submerged car from the water.
