Pedestrian Safety Grant Awarded To Hillsborough Sheriff's Office

Law enforcement officials plan to increase safety awareness at some of the county's most dangerous areas through a seven-month project.

BRANDON, FL — High Visibility Enforcement, a grant project awarded to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, will help raise awareness to pedestrian and bicyclist safety at the most dangerous intersections in the county, said authorities.

This operation is scheduled from Oct. 19 through May 2021.

HVE is funded through a contract with the University of North Florida in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation’s focused initiative to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, said authorities.

The locations in the project include:

  • Brandon Road, from Kings Avenue to Valrico Road
  • US Highway 41, from Phillips Lane to Gibsonton Drive
  • Adamo Drive, from I-75 to Providence Road
  • Hillsborough Avenue, from Memorial Highway to Eisenhower Boulevard
  • Fletcher Avenue, from Nebraska Avenue to Bruce B Downs Boulevard
  • US Highway 41, from College Avenue to Shell Point Road
  • Nebraska Avenue, from Fletcher Avenue to Sears Avenue
  • US Highway 301, from Columbus Drive to Harney Canal
  • Orient Road, from Dr MLK Jr Boulevard to E Hanna Road
  • Bruce B Downs Boulevard, from E Fowler Avenue to E 131st Avenue
  • S 50th Street, from Madison Avenue to S 16th Avenue
  • N Dale Mabry Highway, from W Idlewild Avenue to W Waters Avenue
  • Waters Avenue, from Sheldon Road to Manhattan Avenue
  • W Hillsborough Avenue, from Pinellas County line to Memorial Highway
  • Dr MLK Jr Boulevard, from Lakewood Drive to Parsons Avenue
  • N Dale Mabry Highway, from Fletcher Avenue to Ehrlich Road

"We are thankful for the HVE grant, which will allow us to further educate our community on the rules of the road and hopefully save lives," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "This operation will serve as a reminder of the responsibility we all share, whether you're a motorist, pedestrian, or cyclist, to keep our roadways safe."

Sheriff Chronister is offers the following tips for driver, bicylist and pedestrian safety:

  • Drivers: Obey speed limits, never drive impaireda nd always watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Bicyclists: Obey traffic laws, ride in the direction of traffic and use lights when riding at night.
  • Pedestrians: Cross in crosswalks or at intersections, obey pedestrian signals and make sure you are visible to drivers when walking at night.
