Pets May Suffer Spring Allergies, Too, Vets Say

There are some steps Tampa Bay area residents can take to help their dogs and cats weather allergy season a little better.

TAMPA, FL — That distinct layer of yellow dust spotted on many vehicles throughout the Tampa Bay area this time of year is a good indication that allergy season is here. While people sensitive pollen may sneeze, sniffle and take over-the-counter products to muddle through, dogs and cats with allergies are likely to scratch, and scratch and scratch, vets say.

While people often suffer allergic reactions courtesy of airborne allergen contact, such as when they inhale pollen, pets tend to absorb those allergens through their skin, explain the vets at BluePearl Veterinary Partners. That type of exposure causes itching, which leads to scratching, which can also lead to skin and ear infections.

“It’s the itch that turns into a rash,” said Dr. Nadine Znajda, a clinician in BluePearl’s dermatology service in Tampa.

Znajda says pet owners often come in saying their dogs have hives, but in reality they are suffering from bacterial skin infections prompted by allergies.

Just like humans, dogs and cats can be allergic to mold, dust mites, pollen and lots of other substances in the environment. Owners with dogs who have allergies may notice excessive scratching, licking of the feet, bottom scooting across the floor and face rubbing on furniture. Cat owners may notice pulled out clumps of hair or excessive licking, vets say.

If the signs of allergies are persistent, pets may benefit from a trip to the family vet for help. Should the issue be severe, a specialist appointment might follow.

Owners with dogs who are susceptible to allergies can help their pets avoid flare ups after going outside by simply wiping their faces, undersides and paws with unscented baby wipes when they come in, BluePearl recommends. This can help remove any allergens from the fur and skin. And, for those with severe reactions, BluePearl suggests that trip to a family vet.

Pollen levels are currently low in the Tampa Bay area, according to Accuweather.
