Watch: Man Fakes Heart Attack to Steal Toys

The Florida man created a diversion to help his accomplice get away, police said.

Two Polk County men are on the sheriff’s office’s naughty list after deputies say they hatched a scheme to steal toys from a Lake Wales Walmart.

The incident unfolded Tuesday as the two men casually walked through the store together, loading a cart with expensive toys. Their haul included a motorized power wheel Barbie car, a Barbie Glam vacation house and a Leap Frog tablet. All told, the cart contained nearly $400 in toys, a media release from the sheriff’s office stated.

Once the men had their fill, deputies say, they walked to the front of the store. One of the men then laid down on the floor, clutched his chest and “faked a heart attack.”

That move, deputies said, drew the attention of other shoppers, who stopped to check on the man, enabling the accomplice to slip out the front door without paying.

Once the man with the cart was safely away from the doors, the medical emergency faker got up and simply walked out, deputies said.

The scheme was caught on store surveillance video.

Arrested were Tarus Scott, 30, and Genard Dupree, 27. Polk deputies say Dupree played the role of “heart attack” victim during the shoplifting spree. Both are now making cameo appearances at the Polk County Jail, facing grand theft charges.

Polk deputies say both Scott and Dupree have lengthy arrest records. Scott was released from state prison last year after serving 10 years. Dupree is currently on felony probation.
