Wrong-Way Crash On SR 60 Leaves Driver In Critical Condition

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a wrong-way crash that left one driver in serious condition and the other in critical condition.

BRANDON, FL -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a wrong-way crash that left one driver in serious condition and the other in critical condition.

According to troopers, around midnight on Wednesday, Dec. 12, Walt Pfeifer, 70. of Valrico was driving a Jeep Cherokee west in the inside eastbound lane of State Road 60 just east of Miller Road.

He collided head on with a Corvette driven by Matthew Bell, 34, of Valrico.

The Jeep then rotated and overturned across all lanes before coming to rest on the south should of SR 60.

The Corvette spun around and came to rest in the median.

The crash closed the eastbound lanes of SR 60 until 6:38 a.m.

Troopers say both Bell and Pfeifer were intoxicated at the time of the accident. Bell was taken to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries and Pfeifer was taken to Tampa General with serious injuries.
