You don't have to spend a fortune to spruce up your kitchen. Here are 7 inexpensive ideas to help you get the most out of your kitchen:
1. Get your hands on what you need fast with rollout trays. When you outfit specific areas of your kitchen with rollout trays, you can maximize your space and have everything you need for a task. For example, pots, pans and lids in a rollout tray are organized and at your fingertips.
2. Maximize space with half-moon shelves. If space is limited and you cannot fit a Lazy Susan into a corner, you can still store canned goods – or anything – and utilize that empty space with a pullout half-moon shelf.
3. Avoid exposing cabinets to sunlight. Sunlight dries out wood, breaking down the finish and exposing raw wood to heat and humidity. Draw the drapes to keep direct sunlight off your cabinets, and start a maintenance program when your cabinets are two or three years old. Like an oil change for your car, it’s quick, inexpensive and important to the life of your cabinets. The tune-up removes contaminants from the wood, conceals nicks, cuts and scratches and adds protective oil that regenerates wood fibers and prevents further damage without sanding, stripping or varnish.
4. Use a non-silicone wood cleaner. Many branded wood products contain silicone, which is hard to remove and negatively impacts the finish. Instead, clean with a gentle white soap and water, then dry wood well after cleaning with a lint-free rag.
5. Don’t forget to turn on the ventilating fan when cooking. This reduces deposits on all kitchen surfaces.
6. Remember the trivet/coaster when placing pans or glasses on furniture. These go a long way to preventing scorches or watermarks.
7. Take care of nicks, gouges and scratches immediately. Never leave bare wood exposed.
