Artists Corner: Mary Ellen O'Brien

Stop by the Carrollwood Cultural Center, and one thing is clear: local artists are making their mark in Tampa Bay.

One of those artists is area resident Mary Ellen O'Brien, who received honorable mention in a recent show at the center.

Patch talked to O'Brien about her artistic influences and how she got her start as an artist.

Patch: How did you get started doing artwork?

O'Brien:  I was sparked by my high school art teacher, and took every course she offered. I never had a study hall in high school. I attended art classes instead. Also I am a graduate of Cambridge School of Design, a
four-year art school.  

Patch: What is your artistic specialty?

O'Brien: I have worked in many media including oil, colored pencils, print-making, clay, etc, however for the past several years I have been involved in silk painting. 

Patch: Who or what are you influences creatively?

O'Brien: I have studied all the great masters, so one can't help but be influenced by all of the artists who have gone before. So, I use my own imagination and creativity to bring my emotions to life.

Patch: What do you think your work says about who you are?

O'Brien: I am whimsical and like bright, vibrant colors, and I hope my artwork brings that to the surface.

O'Brien: My work is frequently in the Carrollwood Cultural Center
