Crape Murdering

Don't Murder Your Crape Myrtles

The practice of trimming crape myrtles down to nubs is of no benefit to the tree.  The tree may benefit in the beginning to a quick trim, but once it is more than 1" caliper, the practice should stop.  Save your money and keep your crape myrtles happy--don't trim.

Finally, no plant should be trimmed more than 1/3 of its height.  I was walking one day when I saw an entire hedge of crape myrtles cut in half.  The next spring only about half survived, and the homeowner ended up paying to have all of them pulled up and replaced with a hedge plant.

Do a little research and make sure your landscape people know what they're doing before you pay them to cost you money.
