How to Beat The Spring Frizzies
Hair stylist Darren Pena reveals how to keep your hair from going frizzy as Springtime humidity comes to town.
It’s baa-ack. The hot weather. The humidity. Spring has sprung in Florida, and with it, the terror of the frizzies.
It’s the time of year when women get up in the morning and their hair looks great when they are done getting ready for the day, and within five minutes of walking outside, their hair makes them look like an extra in The Walking Dead.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can tame the frizzies into fabulous if you know how to do it. Here are some tips that might help you:

The 100 Percent Solution — Okay, the first rule of beating the summer frizzies is to put duct tape over the snooze button on your alarm clock. The snooze button is the enemy of great looking springtime hair, because it means you wind up rushing to get ready in the morning. As a result, you don’t fully dry your hair, so there is still moisture in your hair when you walk out the door. As soon as you do, the moisture in the air joins with the moisture in your hair and bam — muppet hair. Make sure you dry your hair fully, draining 100 percent of the moisture from your hair before you walk out the door. Dry hair in the morning is your first line of defense against the frizzies.
Product — There are plenty of moisturizers and anti-frizz products on the market, but I am an ambassador for Pureology’s line of smoothing agents, so those are the ones I tend to recommend. The key thing to look for in an anti-frizz product is whether it is made specifically for your type of hair. For instance, if you have fine textured hair, you’ll want to try Pureology’s Super Smooth Relaxing Serum, which is designed for fine to medium textured hair. Now, if your hair is coarse, thick, strong hair, you want Pureology’s Super Smooth Smoothing Cream. This product straightens and deflates hair. So, if you have the type of hair that poofs up thick after blow-drying, so much so that it looks like you’re wearing a wig, then you want something to deflate that effect. Of course, Pureology also has a line of Super Smoothing shampoos and conditioners so you can really take advantage of the full range of anti-frizz products available.

Services — Sometimes hair can be stubborn, and even in the face of doing all the right things, it will scream “rebellion!” If your hair is a hardcase frizzy, there are some new salon services that might be able to wrestle your hair into submission. A new service called SmoothBlock will be launching in June, and it is designed to keep your hair smooth for 10 washings. This is ideal for someone who has a special event or a vacation coming up and they want their hair to look their best. The price range for this service, depending on the hair, will be between $40 and $50 dollars. If you want to go medieval on your frizzies, there is a more stringent smoothing treatment that lasts for 15 weeks. Now, this one can cost between $125 to $400, depending on the task at hand, but it’s designed to be a longer-term solution. When you consider that time is money, and you consider just how much time and effort you put into banishing the frizzies from your coif, this kind of treatment is actually very cost effective.
And that’s it. You don’t have to let Spring turn your hair into a Slinky. Follow these tips, and your hair will be in for a shimmery straight Spring.
