Community Garage Sale Fundraiser to Raise Money for Kids Programs

Event being held for second year in a row

It's time to drag out that old couch, antique tea set and dusty set of Encyclopedias.

Why?

The second annual community garage sale fundraiser will be held at Northdale Recreation Center, 15550 Spring Pine Drive in Northdale, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26.

Proceeds will be donated to the Friends of the Park and Adopt-A-Camper programs, which help local kids attend after school and summer programs.

The fundraiser, which is being sponsored by Walgreen's, Beef O'Brady's and McDonald's, raised $2,800 last year for the programs, said Marty Katz, a member of the OWLS who is helping organize the event.

County-mandated increases in the cost of after school programs hindered the ability of some families to pay for the programs, Katz said, prompting the idea for the fundraiser.

"It's tough for families who have two or three kids," he said, "because you want them off the street after school."

During the event, refreshments such as hotdogs and iced tea will be on sale for $1, with all proceeds going to the after school programs, Katz said.

Rick Valdez, director of the center, said the fundraiser is important for families facing financial struggles.

"A lot of people are in financial crisis," he said, "so we want to do everything we can to help keep them involved."
