Details Emerge In Carrollwood Deputy-Involved Shooting
A man was arrested after being released from the hospital following a Thursday deputy-involved shooting.

TAMPA, FL — A 21-year-old Tampa man faces attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer charges after the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says the he opened fired on two deputies.
According to the sheriff’s office, Cpl. Brian LaVinge and Deputy Michael Diaz responded to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance at 11010 Streamside Drive around 2:13 p.m. Thursday. A witness had said Angel Jordanny Rodriguez Aviles went to the home to find his girlfriend. When he arrived, he was “agitated,” the witnesses said, and demanded the woman leave with him.
The witness, an email from the sheriff’s office said, tried to intervene. Aviles is accused of pulling out a gun and firing a round into the ground. At that time, he began walking south on Streamside Drive with this girlfriend. When the witness told him deputies were on the way, he replied that he “would have to be killed by law enforcement,” an email from the sheriff’s office said.

A scuffle between Aviles and the girlfriend broke out and the two tumbled to the ground, the email said. As that occurred, LaVigne arrived on the scene in full uniform and in a sheriff’s office Dodge Charger.
LaVigne, the email said, saw the dispute going on and noticed Aviles’ handgun. He got out of his cruiser, drew his FNS 9mm and ordered Aviles to drop his weapon, the email said.

“The defendant refused multiple commands and raised the handgun, a Glock 23 .40 caliber, and fired the handgun at Cpl. LaVigne,” the email said.
At that point, Deputy Michael Diaz arrived on the scene and the two deputies fired their weapons and attempted to retreat to cover, the agency reported. Aviles is accused of repeatedly maneuvering to gain a clear line of fire on the deputies before he was ultimately shot twice in the left leg, the email said.
LaVigne’s Dodge was struck multiple times during the exchange, the sheriff’s office noted.
Aviles was brought into custody after the shooting and admitted to “running around,” the email said. He initially said deputies fired on him first, but changed his statement, the sheriff’s office said.
Aviles was treated and released at a local hospital. After release, he was charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder of a law enforcement officer and two counts of premeditated firearm discharge. He was booked into the Orient Road Jail.
LaVigne is a 25-year veteran. Diaz is a 6-year veteran in detention and has been a law enforcement officer for 7 months.
