Free lecture about Braille on October 6 for Blind Awareness Month

The Carrollwood Cultural Center will host a free lecture titled The Art of [Braille] with Matt Weihmuller on Thursday, October 6, at 7 p.m. for Blind Awareness Month.

Weihmuller, a visually impaired music instructor and saxophonist in Tampa, will discuss his experience with braille and how he uses braille music code. He will also share his experience as a present-day music teacher instructing blind and sighted students.

Weihmuller is a graduate of H.W. Blake High School of the Arts. He completed his undergraduate and master of music degrees at Florida State University. Weihmuller has been the jazz and saxophone instructor at the Patel Conservatory at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts for the last nine years and works with the annual jazz intensive summer camp to further students' improvisational skills.

In addition to his time at the Straz Center, Weihmuller works with Arts4All Florida. He currently works with the Young Performers Program, which provides instruction for young performers with disabilities. Additionally, he speaks about his unique experiences regarding diverse learning, including several engagements as a guest lecturer at the Peabody Conservatory at John Hopkins University in Baltimore.

The Center received funding for The Art of [Braille] through the AARP Community Challenge grant.
