Sickles High School Evacuated Due To Nearby Fire

CARROLLWOOD, FL -- A fire at a home behind Sickles High School, 7950 Gunn Highway, prompted the evacuation of the school Thursday around 8:30 a.m.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said the school wasn't in danger but officials decided to evacuate as a precaution. Students were moved to the north side of the campus away from the heavy smoke on the south side of the school, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the house and attached garage in the 8300 block of Old Hixon Road off Sheldon Road. The home on fire is located behind the high school off Sheldon Road. No one was inside the home when the fire broke out.

Fire rescue said the students were evacuated for about a 25 minutes. Classes have resumed at Sickles High School.

The fire is under investigation.
