Teen Killed Crossing Gunn Highway

The fatal crash happened near Nixon Road.

TAMPA, FL — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal Thursday night crash that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old Tampa Bay Tech student.

According to the sheriff’s office, Emily Cynthia Lopez was crossing Gunn Highway southbound just before 9 p.m. Lopez, an email from the agency said, was wearing all black and moved against a “no walk signal.”

As Lopez crossed, near Nixon Road, an Altima driven by Melody Suarez, 48, was heading east on Gunn facing a steady green light. Suarez “did not see the pedestrian until she struck the pedestrian with her driver side mirror,” the email said.

At that time, a second car, a Lexus driven by Jillian Benabe, 28, was also headed east on Gunn. When the Altima swerved right, Benabe saw Lopez in front of her, the sheriff’s office said.

“She attempted to swerve left but struck the pedestrian before she could turn the wheel,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
