3 Toddlers, 3 Adults Hospitalized When Truck Hits Day Care

Clearwater police said a grandmother at the day care picking up her grandchild accidentally hit the gas pedal and lost control.

CLEARWATER, FL — Three children and three adults were taken to the hospital after a 57-year-old woman accidentally crashed into a Clearwater day care center Monday.

Clearwater Police and Clearwater Fire & Rescue were called to the Building Blocks Children's Center, 1112 Lakeview Road, just before 5:30 p.m.

According to police, a grandmother who was there to pick up her grandchild noticed another child in front of her pickup truck and tried to brake. Instead, she hit the gas pedal and she lost control of the truck in the parking lot, striking multiple people including a mother and her three children, ages 2, 3 and 5.

The three children were taken to All Children's Hospital for treatment, while their mother went to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

The driver of the pickup truck was taken to Largo Medical Center and a day care staff member was taken to Mease Dunedin Hospital.

Firefighters shored up the portion of the day care center that was struck by the truck and employees of the city's building department will conduct an inspection of the building Tuesday.

None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

The 57-year-old driver of the pickup was cited for careless driving.
