A Dedicated Campaign to Fight Drug Abuse Helps Students Find the Truth About Drugs

“I had no idea where it would lead me,” says a former addict in the feature-length documentary The Truth About Drugs: Real People, Real Stories, speaking about the drug abuse that brought him “to almost dying, to stealing, lying, cheating, ruining relationships.” 

The Truth About Drugs documentary offers compelling accounts from individuals who survived the nightmare of addiction and answers common questions about the most abused drugs, including what they are, what they look like, how they’re taken, and what they do to the body and mind. 

Broadly used as an educational tool in schools across the country, the film explodes myths about 12 drugs of abuse, including marijuana, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, painkillers and other prescription drugs.

It is just one of the drug prevention tools which are described in a brochure just released by the Church of Scientology: Scientology: How We Help—The Truth About Drugs, Creating a Drug-Free World.

Detective Clay Barrett of the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) instructor, said he “found all of the materials to be very useful in educating our youth about the dangers of drug usage.” After he began using the materials provided by the Foundation for a Drug Free World, Barrett said he found students “very receptive. [They] enjoyed the materials and welcomed the education.” Barrett shared them with other police instructors who, in turn, incorporated them into their curricula.

“The students in my past classes were particularly interested in learning the street names of narcotics as many of them had heard some of the names before in the form of offers to purchase drugs,” he said. “Once being informed of what these names were and the long-term effects these drugs shared, many students vowed to never touch drugs.”
